Justice for Dog Stabbed 50 Times, Stuffed in Suitcase and Left for Dead
n a shockingly cruel case, an unknown attacker violently stabbed a pit bull 50 times before stuffing the animal in a blue suitcase and leaving him for dead.
The pit bull, named Ollie, was only found after a passerby heard the dog's desperate cries and called Hollywood, Florida police. When officers arrived on the scene, they heard Ollie crying and saw a paw sticking out of the suitcase.
Ollie was rushed to the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital, where he was given intensive treatment and, despite the horrific abuse he had suffered, remained sweet and trusting, even wagging his tail at his caretakers.
The veterinary team tried their best to save Ollie, but the severely wounded dog tragically passed away after fighting for his life for two days.
Whoever tortured and killed this innocent dog must be held responsible for their hideous crime. Sign the petition urging Hollywood police to not give up looking for the perpetrator, and to make every effort to find them, prosecute them and make sure they are never allowed to own an animal for the rest of their life.

5 Reasons a Rottweiler May Be the Perfect Breed for You
We know you’re smart, and so already know there’s more to Rottweilers than their stereotype a tough-as-nails guard dog. The breed has been around since the Roman Empire and has personality to spare. They can also be incredibly sweet:
oyal and loving, brave and protective, this breed may just be what you’re looking for. What’s true, however, is that a good fit goes both ways. A Rottweiler requires a particular kind of owner.
Are you right for a Rottweiler? Let’s see if any of the following apply to you:
1. You’re calm, confident, and assertive.
You’re a take charge person who knows what you want out of life. While a strong, self-assured dog might sound like a helpful contrast to those with timid personalities, a Rottweiler needs to know their owner is the “alpha” from day one. They’ll challenge uncertainty and can outsmart lesser humans. They have a strong desire to understand chains of command and pecking order. Fortunately you’re not the shy type, and consistently demonstrate leadership in your household. You’re the leader of the pack.
2. You place a high value on training and discipline.
Even the cutest canine face can’t con you out of enforcing the rules. You keep your own daily regimen and are ready to adopt a new family member that needs structure from day one. You’re prepared to ignore whining, and can be all business until your Rottweiler is good and calm – and then you’ll lavish affection. Since you already love daily exercise and have a routine, you simply have to shift your time and activity to walks and games that also work out the energy of this muscular, powerful pooch.

3. You’re not a complete neat freak.
While you’re big on discipline, your demands don’t extend to an overly-immaculate house. You’re ready for a companion who wants to be in the home with you, a pack animal that needs their human close by, a happy playmate who can deal with being kenneled or crated sometimes but needs human contact to remain sociable and happy. The upsides of your furry friend outweigh the realities of shedding, that broad body brushing magazines off the coffee table, or that tenacious tail tipping something over. You’re understanding and are prepared to share your house with a rigorous Rottweiler.
4. You crave affection and proximity.
Your “love languages” are time and touch. A Rottweiler likes to be near their owner, with their head or paws in your lap. You’re not only comfortable with that closeness, but you appreciate it. As they follow you from room to room and even lean against your leg, it doesn’t get old. You’re fond of a dichotomous dog that, while imposing and powerful, really loves to snuggle!
5. You play the long game.
You don’t view friends aren’t short-term acquaintances; you’re in it for the long haul and your Rottweiler won’t be an exception. Since this dog will be fiercely faithful and bound to you, you’re willing to go the distance for them. Whether it’s a puppy or Rottweiler rescue, you’re ready for a long term relationship.
It’s no surprise that actor Will Smith resonates with Rottweilers, since he’s a leader of the pack in Hollywood and known for being a fun-loving charmer. If your alpha personality resonates with the personality traits above, you might be on your way to realizing a Rottweiler is the companion for you.

Why are German Shepherds so loyal?
But, why are German Shepherds so loyal? A dog’s temperament and characteristics are mainly a product of two things:
Their genes, DNA, quality of breeding, what they were bred for, and their natural instincts and drives
How they are treated, bonded with, trained and socialised
Let’s look at each of these things in more detail for German Shepherds when it relates to loyalty…
German Shepherd genes, DNA, quality of breeding, what they were bred for, and their natural instincts and drives.
It started when the breed was created in 1899.
he breed creator Max von Stephanitz wanted a standardised dog breed that was the ideal working dog and showed all the primary characteristics like loyalty, intelligence, strong working drives, and essentially a dog that would do anything it’s owner asked, and was eager to please.
Appearance came second to those things – although the dog did have to have a good working body – good bone structure and health.
This relationship of the German Shepherd breed being bred as the ideal dog to serve humans in a working capacity is where all modern day German Shepherds get all those common characteristics from – including loyalty.
Throughout the 1900’s – the bloodlines diverged into the show lines and the working lines, with show lines have more of a focus on appearance and movement/gait, whereas the working lines likely only had this master-working dog relationship strengthened.
Without obedience, loyalty and respect (the core traits the breed was based upon) – you don’t have a very good working type dog.
In modern times, the German Shepherd is bred all over the world.
Europe is known for having high breeding regulations, where breeding is not regulated extensively in other parts.
The breed generally does still maintain the core parts of the original breeding stock, but temperaments and individual dog traits can vary wildly.
Some German Shepherds who have been bred from common pet stocks might be clumsy, skittish and fun loving. They may or may not have working ability.
Whilst others with strong working lines will appear focussed, intelligent, well behaved, and well balanced temperament between working tasks and family life.
How they are treated, bonded with, trained and socialised
The ideal German Shepherd:
Has a stable temperament – calm and non-reactive most of the time, but will protect or alert if they sense danger or a threat
Competent with both its show and working ability
Has a basic obedience level
Has a basic training level with ability to perform basic commands
Is socialised and not aggressive around humans
Is socialised and not aggressive around other animals (although some dogs show higher desire for dominance than others)
Has a good bond with its owner and family – achieved by spending quality time together
Shows a love and firm protection for their owner and family – although the protection is not aggressive, but rather passive, unless attacked or there is a serious threat
But treatment of the dog, how much of an effort the owner puts in bonding, the time and quality of puppy and adult training and how well socialised the dog is all have an affect on how the dog expresses itself.
A dog may show signs of disloyalty if they have had a traumatic experience and are fearful of or don’t trust humans, if it doesn’t have a strong bond or respect for its owner, if they are disobedient because they haven’t been trained, or if they haven’t been shown how to properly interact with other animals and humans.
Even though a dog comes from a certain breed with general characteristics, it is up to the owner to love, train and hone the dog’s behaviors in a positive fashion.
Are German Shepherds Loyal To Only One Person?
Generally a German Shepherd will be loyal to their immediate family and the people they know i.e. the people it lives with and considers part of their pack – could be you, your partner, kids etc.

5 Important Health Concerns For German Shepherd Dogs
or all their prized traits, they do suffer from certain breed associated disorders that all Shepherd lovers must be aware of. Some of the issues I see regularly in Shepherds are much less common in any other dog, so the genetic and breed association cannot be refuted. This article focuses on the ones that I see most commonly in my practice. Each of these diseases brings to my mind memorable patients that I have treated for these maladies.
#1 – Perianal Fistula
Perianal fistula is a disorder most commonly seen in German Shepherds. The disease is characterized by draining openings on the skin around the anus. Affected dogs may strain to defecate, have diarrhea or bloody stool and lick at the anal area frequently. Some of my Shepherd owners first noticed foul odors on their dog’s bedding as an early sign. Obviously secondary infection in this area is a great risk and because of the many nerves that supply the area, the ailment is painful and debilitating. Scientists and veterinarians have studied the process and many treatments are now available with varying individual success.¹ The aesthetically desirable low tail carriage of these dogs, covering the anus, has contributed to this problem. Studies indicate a high rate of control with dietary manipulation, suggesting a food allergy component and a possible link to inflammatory bowel disease. The disease has been thought to be similar to Crohn’s disease in people.²
Sachi is my favorite patient currently dealing with this issue. Her owners have been sensitive to her issues in this area from early on and have followed all of my recommendations. To date, Sachi’s disease has not significantly progressed and her quality of life is excellent. She is an example of what attentive compliance to veterinary instructions can achieve.
2 – Megaesophagus
Megaesophagus (from the Greek Mega meaning large) is a condition in which the esophagus (tube that carries food to the stomach when we swallow) becomes limp and is not able to normally pass the food on its way to be digested. The type of megaesophagus that we see in German Shepherds is a congenital problem that a recent study found to correlate to chromosome 12.³ Affected dogs often begin to show signs, vomiting and regurgitation when they are weaned to a solid diet. They usually appear malnourished and may be the “runt” of a litter. Management is lifelong and usually involves liquid diets and elevated feedings, but can differ depending on the individual patient. There is no “cure” for this problem.
Megaesophagus always makes me remember one patient long ago named Charlie. His story is a touching one. He will appear in my next book. His life is a testimony to love and perseverance. He and his family faced his disability with both and just thinking about him makes me smile.
#3 – Hip Dysplasia
Most people by now know about hip dysplasia. The hip joint is a ball and socket joint and hip dysplasia causes malformation of the components leading to instability. There can be abnormalities in the either the ball or the socket (or both) and the chronic laxity causes abnormal wear and leads to osteoarthritis. There is a strong genetic correlation for hip dysplasia in German Shepherds and some other breeds, but a recent study in New Zealand found that only the German Shepherd Dog has shown statistical improvement in the breed for the prevalence of dysplasia despite breeding programs designed to reduce its prevalence in all affected breeds.⁴ Because this is a painful disorder that is genetic in origin, testing and responsible breeding practices are our only way to reduce the occurrence in these and other dogs. The signs in affected dogs can be reduced and managed, but most cases require lifelong management.
.
#5 – Degenerative Myelopathy
Degenerative myelopathy is a neurologic disease and is a recessive genetic disorder in the German Shepherd Dog.³ Affected dogs are usually middle aged or older patients and this disorder is difficult to distinguish from other causes of spinal cord compromise, like intervertebral disc disease found commonly in many types of dogs. This genetic cause of weakness and paraplegia can only be positively identified postmortem with a histological exam of spinal cord tissue. Affected dogs will experience rear limb weakness that is progressive, eventually leading to paralysis.
Thinking about this disorder makes me especially wistful since my childhood dog, Skip, was suspected to have succumbed to DM. Smiling Skip would hear the school bus before it arrived and be waiting eagerly for me to get home. He didn’t fall ill until I was in vet school, but once the symptoms began, they progressed rapidly and I lost my first love to this disorder. The prognosis for this cause of neurologic signs is not favorable, but it is important to see your vet in case the symptoms are caused by another more treatable disorder.
Over 50 genetic diseases are seen in the German Shepherd Dog. While humans were selecting for the most admirable traits, we inadvertently may have bred for some other less desirable issues. Remember that knowledge is power. If you have a Shepherd, embrace her beauty and intelligence, but keep an eye out for what you can do to head off problems and maintain quality of life for your fearless and loyal friend.

Chow Chow Hereditary Health And Genetic Diversity
The Chow Chow is a strong, sturdy dog breed that hails from northern China, and which is most distinctive thanks to its coat, and rather unusual tongue! The breed is often said to resemble the lion, due to its very thick double-layered coat, which is particularly long around the neck, giving it a ruffled appearance similar to that of the male lion.
The breed also has a highly distinctive blue-black coloured tongue, and a highly curled tail that is typical of spitz-type dogs. The breed can be seen in colours including black, blue, fawn, red, cinnamon and cream. The coat should be all one colour, with coats containing two or more colours considered as outside of the preferred breed standard. Dogs of the breed stand between 17-20” tall at the withers, and males can weigh between 55-70lb, with females falling between 45-60lb.
The Chow Chow is classed as a high profile dog breed by the UK Kennel Club, meaning that the breed is subject to careful monitoring for their hereditary diversity and breed-specific health problems. If you are considering buying a Chow Chow dog, it is important to make yourself aware of what this means for your dog in terms of their health and longevity.
In this article, we will look at the hereditary health, genetic diversity and longevity of the breed in more detail. Read on to learn more.
Chow Chow longevity
The average lifespan of the Chow Chow can be rather variable, with the median figure for UK dogs being between 9-15 years, covering the range from a relatively short lifespan across the board for dogs of a similar size, to the top end of the scale.
A large part of this variance can be attributed to the propensity for hereditary health problems within certain breed lines, and breed lines that are free or mainly free of such problems will tend to be much longer lived than others.

Genetic diversity and breed-specific health tests for the Chow Chow
The coefficient of inbreeding statistic for the Chow Chow is 6.6%, which is only a touch higher than the ideal of 6.25% or lower. This means that there is a relatively high degree of genetic diversity across the breed as a whole, and that the breed is not subject to a particularly high degree of inbreeding.
Health testing prior to breeding is recommended by The Kennel Club and the British Veterinary Association, to identify a predisposition to certain hereditary health problems:
Elbow dysplasia, with the ideal elbow score being zero.
Hip dysplasia, with the mean hip score for the breed being 18.5, which is rather high. Potential parent dogs should receive a hip score below this figure in order to be considered as good breeding stock.
Chow Chow conformation problems
The build and conformation of the Chow Chow can itself lead to a range of potential problems and challenges for the breed, which all owners should be aware of:
The thick, heavy coat of the breed means that they can have problems staying cool enough in hot weather, and the breed is prone to overheating.
Laboured breathing and snoring may be caused by the shape of the muzzle.
The angle and shape of the joints can lead to an unsound gait in overtyped dogs of the breed.
The breed is prone to having smaller than normal eyes, which can cause entropion. This is a painful condition that leads to the eyelashes becoming angled inwards, and rubbing on the cornea.
While the blue-black tongue of the Chow Chow is a breed trait and not a problem in and of itself, this can, on occasion, be mistaken for circulatory problems and necrosis.
Other health problems within the breed
The Chow Chow is also known to have a propensity to some other health conditions too, for which no pre-breeding screening is currently available. These include:
Panosteitis, or inflammation of the bones.
Patellar luxation, or dislocation of the kneecap.
Cruciate ligament weakness, which can lead to rupture and sprains, causing lameness and pain.
Glaucoma of the eyes.
Various types of canine cancers, including gastric carcinoma.
Bloat or GDV, an acute condition caused by a dangerous build-up of stomach gas that may cause the stomach to twist.
Hypothyroidism, or an underproduction of the necessary hormones by the thyroid gland. This can often be managed with hormone therapy.
Cataracts of the eyes.
Exocrine pancreas insufficiency, leading to an unnaturally high appetite, accompanied by a failure to maintain weight.
Hydrocephalus, or water on the brain.
Non-inflammatory Hereditary Myotonia, which causes the muscles to seize after exercise and take a prolonged period of time to return to normal relaxation.
Heart problems, including pulmonic stenosis, leading to exercise intolerance and an increased risk of heart failure.
Haemophilia, a blood clotting disorder.
Various autoimmune conditions, including pemphigus foliaceus, which leads to skin lesions, and uveodermatological syndrome, which destroys body tissue and is ultimately fatal.
Persistent pupillary membranes, a disease of the eyes.

This is a gorgeous example of the half-moon betta, named for the shape formed by their fins and tail. I find this combination of colors perfectly highlight the half-moon feature.
2. Red Rosetail
Betta Here is a slightly different mutation of the half-moon tail type . Their color and full, flowing lines make it seem to shimmer in the water. Here again we see the color used to great effect to highlight the distinctive fins.
3. Black Orchid Crowntail Betta

This type of fish makes the list for their blend of simplicity and complexity. The crowntail variety is another class of the species genetic mutations. In this example the simple black color in stark contrast to the intricate tail and fins make this type of fish irresistible to the eye.
4. Crowntail Betta
Here is another crowntail betta. In this case the magnificent colors augment the amazingly intricate fins. I find the way the fins transition from blue to red to be particularly striking. Simply another beautiful fish brought into existence by a diligent breeder.
5. Veil Tail Betta
The vail tail betta is the variety most often found for sale in pet stores. Their name comes from their flowing, veil-like fins. Though perhaps not as breathtaking as some other varieties of betta, they are nevertheless beautiful. Color mutations have made these fish available in a vast array of shades. Here are two that I consider to be among the best of the veil tails. It's all about the color!
6. The Double-tailed Betta
freshwater-frenzy.blogspot.com
As their name indicates, the double-tailed betta has been selectively bred to have two tails. In some cases this feature is combined with some of the more exotic types of fins to create truly amazing fish. This photo highlights the double-tail of this very pretty fish.
7. Combtail Betta
aboutbettafishtanks.com
Combtail bettas are the result of breeding crowntail bettas with other varieties such as vail tails. Their tails are usually not as long and flowing as the crowntails, but are still very distinctive in their own right. Here is a nice example of a comb tail with very nice golden red coloring.
8. White Crowntail Betta
Here is another beautiful crowntail betta, this time in white. This type of fish would look beautiful in an aquarium with dark decor where their color would be amplified.
9. Multi-Colored Half-Moon Betta

Goldfish are Good Luck Charms
The goldfish is one of the most popular aquarium fish in the world. Wherever we go where there are tanks, whether in houses, hotels, malls, or parks, there will always be goldfish in these aquariums. They are adored by their beautiful colors and body configurations. But goldfish may not only be a thing of beauty…
Here are some facts about goldfish that you may not know:
The goldfish belongs to the carp family which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp.
Goldfish grown in wild are actually olive green in nature. Only in captivity do they adapt fancy colors. Likewise, domestic goldfish, when released in wild, will eventually revert to olive green color. Furthermore, if goldfish are left in dark for an extended period of time, they can change color to gray. Like humans, they produce pigments in response to light.
There are different goldfish breeds which vary in coloration, size, body shape, and fin design (see Ten Beautiful Breeds of Goldfish).
The goldfish was first domesticated in China. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), people were fond of raising carps in ponds and water gardens. When it was observed that some carps have genetically-mutated from their silver color to gold (yellowish orange), people began to breed these colored carps in the ponds. On special occasions, these carps are taken out and placed on smaller container for display.
Because yellow is the imperial color, people outside the royal family were forbidden to keep goldfish of the gold or yellow variety during the Song Dynasty (1162).
During the 1620s, it became a tradition in Southern Europe for married men to give their wives a goldfish on their one year anniversary. It was believed that goldfish signify good luck and fortune; therefore, doing so will bless the couple with more prosperous years to come.
In Japan, goldfish scooping is a traditional game during summer festivals and religious holidays. In this game, a player scoops goldfish from a basin with a special scooper.
Goldfish can survive in a pond with ice forms on the surface, as long as there is enough supply of oxygen and the pond does not freeze solid.
Goldfish easily die in uncared tanks. Hence, a filter is important to clear waste and keep the pond clean. Moreover, they are very sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Care must be practiced when adding water to the pond or aquarium as the new water may be of different temperature.
Goldfish are prolific and ponds can easily get overstocked. So it is recommendable to provide some form of population control such as raising fish like orfe to consume goldfish eggs.
The goldfish are voracious eaters; they do not stop eating on their own accord. However, overfeeding can block their intestinal tracks and endanger their health.
Goldfish do not like to be petted. Touching them can endanger their health since this can cause their protective slime coat to be damaged or removed, consequently exposing them to infections from bacteria and other parasites.
Goldfish can be trained. They respond to human by surfacing at feeding time, and so they can guided to take pellets from human fingers.
Goldfish have strong associative learning abilities, as well as social learning skills. They are able to distinguish their owners from strangers. They are observed to react favorably to their owners in a “begging for food” manner, while they hide when other people approach the tank.
Goldfish can also recognized the voice, vocal vibration, or sound of thier owners and people around them.
Goldfish have a memory-span of at least three months and can distinguish between different shapes, colors and sounds. The goldfish can be trained to recognize and to react to light signals of different colors or to perform tricks, such as the limbo, fetch, and soccer.
The goldfish can be added to stagnated water bodies to reduce mosquito populations.
Goldfish are edible, though they are rarely eaten.

22 Uplifting Quotes That Will Restore Your Faith In Humanity
Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.
Iain S. Thomas
The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.
David W. Orr
You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
Mahatma Gandhi
When I was young, I used to admire intelligent people; as I grow older, I admire kind people.
Abraham Joshua Heschel
Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution.
Kahlil Gibran
You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.
John Bunyon
Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.”
It is the job of thinking people not to be on the side of the executioners.
Albert Camus
Let us not underestimate how hard it is to be compassionate. Compassion is hard because it requires the inner disposition to go with others to place where they are weak, vulnerable, lonely, and broken. But this is not our spontaneous response to suffering. What we desire most is to do away with suffering by fleeing from it or finding a quick cure for it.”
Henri J.M. Nouwen
The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
Mahatma Gandhi
Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.
Louise Erdrich
Angry people want you to see how powerful they are. Loving people want you to see how powerful you are.
Chief Red Eagle
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
Mother Teresa
Predators prey on gentleness, peace, calmness, sweetness and any positivity that they sniff out as weakness. Anything that is happy and at peace they mistake for weakness. It’s not your job to change these people, but it’s your job to show them that your peace and gentleness do not equate to weakness… I compare myself to silk. People mistake silk to be weak but a silk handkerchief can protect the wearer from a gunshot. There are many people who will want to befriend you if you fit the description of what they think is weak; predators want to have friends that they can dominate over because that makes them feel strong and important. The truth is that predators have no strength and no courage. It is you who are strong, and it is you who has courage. I have lost many a friend over the fact that when they attempt to rip me, they can’t. They accuse me of being deceiving; I am not deceiving, I am just made of silk. It is they who are stupid and wrongly take gentleness and fairness for weakness. There are many more predators in this world, so I want you to be made of silk. You are silk.
C. JoyBell C.
A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.
Mahatma Gandhi
Here are the values that I stand for: honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values.
Ellen DeGeneres
How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.
George Washington Carver
Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.
Dalai Lama
Hurt people hurt people. That’s how pain patterns gets passed on, generation after generation. Break the chain today. Meet anger with sympathy, contempt with passion, cruelty with kindness. Greet grimaces with smiles. Forgive and forget about finding fault. Love is the weapon of the future.
Yehuda Berg
I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.
Mother Teresa
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.
Kent M. Keith,
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
Mahatma Gandhi

Goliath Tigerfish Fresh Water Monsters
The Goliath Tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath) is found in a very remote part of Africa, in a very remote part of a difficult river to reach called the Congo river. Boats are hard to come by. The area is politically unstable and the river flows very fast at some locations. The Congo river drains a significant portion of Africa and is the second largest river outside of the Amazon in terms of river flow. At some points, the river is 10 miles wide.
Distribution
The Goliath Tigerfish is known by many names including the demon fish, giant tigerfish, and the Mbenga. It can be found in the Congo River Basin, Lualaba River, Lake Upemba and Lake Tanganyika. It is difficult to catch and very few outside of its distribution have even heard of it.
The Myth and Superstition
The Goliath Tigerfish is feared by those that live along the river. There are many stories that tell of a possessed fish that seeks out people. There are stories of little girls and babies being attacked in the shallows as they were being washed or playing in the water. There are stories of fishermen being attacked from Goliath Tigerfish leaping out of the water, knocking them into the water and eating them.
Goliath Tigerfish Strength
The Goliath Tigerfish has a double hinged jaw with long serrated teeth that interlock when the mouth is closed. The jaw is designed to allow the fish to open its mouth wide while the teeth are designed to cut anything it bites in half. Some have compared this fish to the Piranha of the Amazon river and rightfully so. It has the same teeth pattern and sharpness but the Goliath Tigerfish grows much bigger.
An adult can grow as large as six feet and reach well over 100 lbs. It is very strong, and can strike with a burst of speed much like that of a Arapaima. Very few that have been attacked by the Goliath Tigerfish live to tell the tail. While a single hit may not cause critical blood loss, the blow can knock one unconscious, which may lead to drowning or death from blood loss. This fish is just as deadly as a great white shark while being a fraction of its size.
The Demon Fish Curse
The Goliath Tigerfish is a cursed fish. Locals believe the fish to be possessed. They believe that if someone places a curse of them and are on the river, the Tigerfish will leap out of the water and kill them or take them while they are in the water. Fisherman that do enter the water and fish the Congo seek out the protection of which doctors. Even when caught by an angler, it still has the power to attack and inflect a death blow. One thing is certain, the fish must be respected.
Separating Fact from the Myth
Each time a person was attacked by the Goliath Tigerfish, they were wearing some sort of reflective object, were splashing in the water or both. The Goliath Tigerfish do not seek out and hunt people, but if a person is disrupting the water and has shiny objects on its person, a life-killing strike may occur. Humans are not part of its diet. In those cases where a body was found, the body was not eaten. When in its habitat, care must be given to how one proceeds when entering the water. Due to the murkiness, proceed cautiously as you would not know it is there until it attacks.
